Rugged Maniac

Well, I am officially unemployed.... until tomorrow that is when I start my new job! Friday, October 14th was my last day with the NPS and it was sad to leave, there are some great people who I will miss.  Since I am still in Colorado I can at least go visit, so that made it easier to say good-bye.  There was a great crowd that came to my going away lunch...

Yesterday (Saturday, October 15, 2011) my friend Deanna and I participated in the Rugged Maniac 5K Race.  It was the hardest 5K (3.1 miles) I have ever done in my life! It was a lot of fun though once we got past the first mile which was nothing but hills! I took my camera along so there are a lot of pictures- enjoy!

We got our bib number written on our leg in case the bib fell off during the race.  I kinda felt like like a convict who no longer has a name, but is known as a number.

This was a very steep hill that we just ran down! It was very slick and quite scary!

Running through the tires... I did get knocked around a bit, but I made it through!

Our goal for this race was not to do it for time, but to have fun... so we did! Deanna jumping off the boulder having a good time!

We came to a muddy pit that we had to get through.  It was like quick sand and I sank deeper and deeper with ever step.  My shoe almost came off, but we both made it through with our shoes and about 10 more pounds of mud to weigh us down!

There were several places where there was a wall or a steep hill to get up.  Nice of them to put the rope there which made it much easier!

There were also several walls to climb over.

This was probably my favorite obstacle... climbing through the muddy swamp under the barbed wire.  It was soooo hot that it felt good to climb through the water.  Side note: I had my camera with me and couldn't get it wet, so we fastened it to my hair.  I'm sure it looked mighty funny to see that, but I kept it safe!

This next series of pictures cracks me up...

My head is almost over

 My head is finally over

Almost there (this picture freaks me out... can you see the weird divot in my knee?)

And finally over, but I got my head chopped off.  Deanna said, "I think it's artistic!" Too funny!

The next obstacle was to jump across these stumps.  I was pretty proud of myself, because I did not fall once!

I had to include this picture... another one where my head got cut off.  It makes me laugh!

This picture cracks me up, too.  Deanna is literally saying, "How did you do this?"

She made it over just fine!

There was one more muddy swamp with barbed wire that we had to made it through.  It was fun!

We climbed up a cargo net...

and jumped onto a soft mat.

When I run down a steep hill I just go... arms flailing and full speed ahead! If I tried to go slower I think I would hurt myself.
The last obstacle I was unable to get pictures of since I had to put my camera down and go back for it after the race.  It was really close to the finish so it wasn't a big deal to retrieve it.  Anyway, the last obstacle was climbing up to a big slide and sliding into FREEZING water and making your way over these log things in order to get out of the water.  It is a good thing it was 80+ degrees yesterday, because anything cooler and I think I may have gotten hypothermia.  I hit that water and my body instantly went into shock and I couldn't move it was so cold! I don't think I was expecting it to be so deep and so cold, but I made it through!

We finished in about 58minutes 45 seconds.  Our goal was 45minutets, but with as much as we stopped to take pictures, fix my hair to secure the camera, and time to dry the hands so I could carry the camera again I'm sure we could have easily made our goal of 45 minutes.  This year was for fun and now that we know what to expect we will actually have to train for next year and do it for time!

Here we are at the finish. We are Rugged Maniacs! Muddy and wet from head to toe. It was a lot of fun!

No Denying It

Hello all! So, I have some exciting news..... I got a new job!  I’m sure this does not come as a shock to most of you since, as Jessica so nicely put it, I seem to have job A.D.D.  I am leaving the comfort and familiarity of Government and going to industry… scary!!! Yet, I have no doubt this is the right move, so it really is not scary at all.  I start on October 17th.  There is a lot of background information before all the pieces start coming together, so bear with me a I share how I reached that conclusion.

As many of you know there was an opportunity to slide into a Government position in the office I currently work.  I applied for that job on July 25th (Side Note: Mom, this is the job I applied for the evening you and Annie went to see 17 Miracles.)  and we all know that the Government is notoriously slow, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that I finally heard from and got an interview a month and a half later! I had the formal interview on Tuesday, September 13th.

Taking a step back, about a month ago I started thinking a lot about my upcoming interview with the Government.  I wanted to do well in the interview to redeem myself from the last horrible interview I had when I wanted to crawl under a rock and hide.  Yes, it was that bad!  That position was also for a Government position in the office I currently work.  I did not get that job.  So, regardless of whether I got the offer on this newly opened position, I wanted to do well in the interview to redeem myself from the previously horrible interview.   I spent a great deal of time prepping… asking people their thoughts, doing a lot of thinking about my career thus far, and coming up with a lot of examples I could pull on illustrating different situations.  Anyway, during this time of preparation I kept getting this feeling that perhaps government was not the right path for me even though that is what I wanted and it looked like I had a great shot of getting this position.

Taking another giant step back, it is important to understand that I had no intention of leaving civil service in the first place.  The only reason I took a Contractor position was to get home from Kuwait.  I had planned on, and wanted to, get another federal position and thus carry on my merry career way in the security of being a Government employee.  With that said, I concentrated my job search efforts only on federal government jobs.

Now, let me take to you Friday, September 9th.  We did a little unconventional VTing that day and went to  the movie, Help.  When I got home after 10:00pm I turned on my computer, but I was not planning on doing any job search stuff.   Well, that changed when I got a thought that said, “What is out there in Industry?” I have learned to not ignore random thoughts like that, because they are not random at all, but rather a quiet prodding for me to do something which gets me headed down the right path.  Needless to say, my answer was “I have no idea since I have only been focused on Government jobs!” So, I immediately went to Indeed.com and typed the word “contract “ in the search box and the first job that popped up was the job I will be starting  in two weeks! I read through the description- sounded great, read through the qualifications- yep, met every one! So, I tweaked my resume, tweaked my cover letter and about 30 minutes later I had applied to the position.

Tuesday, September 13th was my Government interview which did go rather well.  I redeemed myself, so I was happy.  The 13th was also the day I got a phone call from P.D. (Sorry, I don’t want to put the company name, since I don’t want people to find my blog if they search for this company name.)  P.D set up an interview for that Friday, September 16th.

I think all my preparation for the Government interview paid off since I felt very relaxed in the P.D. interview.  I guess it did go as well as I thought since I was asked on Monday to come back for a second interview on Wednesday, September 21st.

I must be doing something right, because on Friday, September 23rd I received both the offer from the Government and P.D.!!! Hmmmm what to chose??? Both are great positions, both have pretty much equal number of pros and cons, and both could potentially be a substantial pay cut.  The only difference is one had the spirit telling me to apply to the position and the other did not… the choice was really not too difficult.  The difficulty came with feeling okay with that choice and knowing it truly was what the Lord wanted for me.

Saturday I had a nice drive where I turned off my music and had some time to think.  That night I went to the Relief Society Broadcast and when Sister Thompson mentioned coming across her Grandmother’s patriarchal blessing the thought came into my mind that I needed to read Dad’s blessing.  Then when President Uchtdorf was speaking (loved his talk) his second point about sacrifice really hit home to me.  He stated, “Second, forget not the difference between a good sacrifice and a foolish sacrifice.  An acceptable sacrifice is when we give up something good for something of far greater worth.”   I realized that money is not everything and there very well may be something of greater “worth” in this new job with P.D. which I cannot see, but I have to trust in the Master Planner who can.

Last Sunday I was still seeking for that confirmation and reassurance that I was making the right decision.  At church there were a couple testimonies shared which spoke peace to my mind.  I cannot remember what was said, but I do remember the peace I felt about choosing P.D.   Also, during Sacrament meeting we sang “Lead, Kindly Light” and the phrase that resonated with me was “I loved to choose and see my path, but now, lead thou me on!” Though seemingly small, I don’t think these things were coincidences.  When I got home after church I had recalled the thought to read Dad’s patriarchal blessing.  So, I pulled it out and starting flipping to the back where it was located.  The page I landed on was a few pages before the blessing and the words on the page that jumped out to me were “I was offered a job…as a Subcontract Administrator.”   Turns out I didn’t need to read the blessing, but that is what got me to pull Dad’s journal out and I have no doubt those were the words I needed to see.  I do not think it coincidence that in my last interview with P.D. the lady over contracts told me that my position title would be “Subcontracts Administrator”.  I had forgotten that Dad did that at one point in his career and oh how I wish he was here so I could pick his brain and hear his stories.  I couldn’t stop the tears from rolling down my face when I realized that I have a father who, though not here physically, is still very much a part of my life, and I have a Heavenly Father who loves me enough to grant me the constant companionship of His Spirit.  It was a very humbling moment and one where I felt immense gratitude.

While every logical bone in my being was telling me to accept the Government position I could not deny the spiritual aspect where I was certain the right choice was to accept the position with P.D.   It also helps knowing that of the 7 people who work there, 2 happen to be L.D.S.! Oh, and when have you been given a verbal offer where the HR guy tells you to pray about it?!!!!

So, this past Monday, September 26th, I got and accepted the official written offer from P.D.  Yes, I am very scared to leave Government and jump into something 180 degrees different then what I do now.  Yes, it was very difficult to tell the Government hiring manager (who happens to be my friend that I have known since 2004, who is the reason I have my current job, and who just offered me a chance to get back into Government which is what I wanted) ‘ I am not accepting the offer.’  I’m sure you can imagine that this past week has been very emotionally and mentally draining for me due to my news and because it was the last week in September, in other words, fiscal year end craziness was in full swing!

So, that is my news.  This job will keep me in Denver and I’m looking forward to riding my bike to work since it will be that close! I am also excited to decorate my new office and to learn a completely new side of contracting… guess I better study up on FAR Part 44!

I know that the Lord’s hand is in our lives.  How grateful I am for the love I am given which is evident through life’s little miracles.  Even though this is a giant leap of faith, I know it is right and I’ve never been lead astray before when I’ve done what I am supposed to do and trust in the Lord!

Hawaii, Reno, and San Francisco

Recently I have been to Hawaii, Reno, San Francisco and back!  Okay, maybe I didn't physically go to Hawaii, but I sure felt like I was there as I walked through the office.  On the 31st of August we had a luau work party where people decorated their cubicles and office space.  Some got a little crazy so you really did feel like you were walking into a different place.  Thanks to Desiree, a friend of mine, I was able to participate in the festivities.
Yes, this is where I spend 8-12 hours a day!

I won 1st place in the "Best Use of Fish" Category!

Over Labor Day weekend I really did go to Reno and San Franciso and spent the weekend with my good friend Ashlee Carter.  It was awesome! I flew in to Reno on Thursday evening and we caught up over dinner at Red Robins.

Friday morning we got in the car and road-tripped it to San Francisco.  It was a 4 hour drive, but time goes quickly when you have good company.  Ater we checked into our hotel room suite we got adventurous and decided to brave public transportation.  That was definitely interesting.  We headed across town to the Picasso exhibit.

Funny story...we met a guy on the bus who was also going to the exhibit so he stayed with us the entire time.  His name is Luis, he is 33 years old, and he is from Costa Rica.  He had some great stories, not to mention he was pretty cute! He owns a restaurant in Costa Rica and was in town for a wedding.  Picasso is not my favorite, but as a good supportive friend, I went.  With Luis around though it did add to the experience! We parted ways and Ashlee and I wondered if we would ever see or hear of Luis again.  Turns out with the little we knew of him we were able to stock him and eventually found him on Facebook.  Ashlee has befriended him in FB... its such a small world!

Outside the Picasso Exhibit... we never got a picture with Luis (sad day!)

It was a true girls weekend, because the rest of Friday was spent being doing what else? Shopping of course! We went to H&M which was great! We also, for the fun of it, went into a Tiffany's and found the rings we eventually want to wear on our left hand! Good times!

Saturday morning we headed out pretty early and spent the day at Fisherman's Warf.  Who would have thought it would be so difficult to find a breakfast place there? After wondering for about 30 minutes we eventually asked the Marriot valet people where they recommend we go for breakfast.  Definitely a good idea since we were directed to this little cafe type place which was packed.  It was a pretty chilly morning on the coast, so we found a Starbucks and Ashlee got hot chocolate and I got a cup of hot water which was delightful to carry around.

After breakfast we went on the Bay Cruise.  Tourse of Alcatrz were sold out until like September 17th... who knew it was so popular? Anyway, we went on the Bay Cruise which was great.  We didn't get to go on the island of Alcatraz, but we did get a great tour which took us out to the golden gate bridge and around Alcatraz.  It was very well done and I highly recommend you do this if you go to San Francisco, especially if you only have about an hour to spare instead of the 3 hours the Alcatraz tour would take.

Once the Bay cruise concluded, we headed right to the submarine docked at Fisherman's Warf and went on a tour.  The audio made the tour awesome, it was fun to hear the stroies, facts and details of the boat.  I would never have thought it possible that 70+ men could be in that little of space for a 6 month time.  Crazy!

Pretty tight quarters!

They got a shower about every 10 days... yuck!

We wondered around Fisherman's Warf for a little while longer before getting on the road to head back to Reno.  Don't worry, we didn't leave before we got our free piece of ghirardelli chocolate. :^)

The trip back to Reno took about 6 hours since there was so much traffic.  I don't think I could ever live in California.  It's a good thing we weren't in a hurry to get back for anything and the company was still just as great, so the drive, though long, was good.

Saturday night we saw a bit of Reno since we went to dinner and then went to a movie.  The next morning we had a lovely drive up the mountain to see Tahoe Lake.  It's amazing that the ski resort is seriously only 20 minutes away from the city.  Nice! The view was awesome and it was such a pretty day!

Sunday afternoon Ashlee invited a few friends over for a fabulous dinner and a fun evening of great conversation.  It's nice to know that no matter where you are there are good people! We were having so much fun that they didn't leave until 11:30pm and Ashlee and I had to be out of the house by 4:00am to make it to the airport.  I got a 2 hour nap that night... needless to say I was struggling to keep my eyes open when my lack of sleep caught up to me on Tuesday!

Ashlee flew out Monday morning at 6:30am  and since it was an international flight we had to be at the airport mighty early.  I didn't wait but 30 minutes after she left before my flight started boarding.  Good timeing!

Thanks Ashlee for the great trip! It really was awesome to spend time with a great friend!

Last story... last night I went to a fireside where Sister Sheri Dew and Sister Wendy Nelson spoke.  They were amazing!! I love Sheri Dew, she is one of my hero's! I even got to shake their hands and thank them for coming.  It was great!

Amazing

Amazing is the best word I can think of to describe my week...

1.  Amazing that after 1 year and 5 months of working in my current job I finally heard a "Thank You" to the all the contractors as a whole.  It was recognized that we are actually part of the team.  I did receive a thank you all the time from my old CO, whom I miss, but that was a first for hearing it said about all of us contractors.

2.  Amazing that I came home from work on Wednesday and did not leave my apartment again until Thursday morning.  Wow! That never happens! With the temple closed for remodeling until October I now have some free time on Wednesday's- Nice!

3.  Amazing that of the 2 good touches I had out of like 50 during my indoor soccer game on Thursday, one of those good touches ended up in the net! It was a pretty sad game, we lost like 8-1.  Yes, I got lucky by being at the right place at the right time and scored our only goal! I'm excited to be playing again... the last time I played indoor was November 2008!

4.  Amazing that I feel I can run again.  I ran for 40 minutes (that is all I had time for) on Saturday which is the longest I have gone running since June 25th.  My knee is still not 100%, but I can deal with minor pain. Yeah!

5.  Amazing and beautiful world we live in.  I love the mountains! I went hiking with some friends on Saturday to Maxwell Falls.  Beautiful day with great company.  Good times!

6.  Amazing Race Season 2: A Mile High.  Typically sequels are not as good as the first, but this year's race was just as amazing! There were 3 teams this year and while my team didn't come in first place I definitely think we had the best outfits!

Deanna, Audra, me, Candice-  Go Team!

The first clue was written on the back of a puzzle.  I'm sure we looked mighty silly sitting in the middle of a main sidewalk at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.  At least people couldn't miss us in those bright shirts!

The second clue led us to the Cookie Lady on 16th street mall.  At this stop we had to each down at least 2 cookies and a thing of milk.  I think there were 10 cookies total that had to be consumed.  Yep, I think I got 2 cookies and a bite and that is about all I could do!

The third clue brought us to the giant bench and giant water hydrant along 16th street mall.  Here one person from the team had to do the challenge which was to sharpen 2 pencils until all that was left was the eraser.
Candice's creative way to sharpen when her arms got tired.

We were in the lead until the next clue where we got thrown off track.  We went to the wrong King Soopers.  Oops! After finding our clue under the bottom shelf of the air filters we were off to East High School football stadium.  Here we had to go around the stadium throwing a football where each member of the team had to pass it to each other member of the team at least three times.  We were doing this while sprinting around the stadium.

From there we went to Cherry Creek area and found our clue in an information sign.  We had to decipher a morse code message to know where we were heading next.  The message took us across the street (we drove around the block before we realized it was seriously right across the street.  Too funny!) to a FedEx drop box where we pulled out the blow up finger and were directed to go back to the starting line. We arrived second, about 10 minutes after the winning team.

We ran a lot, we laughed a lot, we only went down a one-way street the wrong way twice (not on purpose one of those times), and most of all we had a great time!

The Winning Team's Award Ceremony.  Nice job Cat, Gabi, Bri and Bo!

A great BIG THANK YOU to Diana for yet another AMAZING Race!
